Even though 2025 has not yet started, I have already started my good intentions, namely improving my skills in woodworking and keeping in mind that my work can also be fun. I worked on improving my skills by making this nest of bowls. I did not have the right tool for that and the first thing I had to do was forge one. A turning tool with a twist to get in between the bowls, that is what I needed. And that mission was accomplished. At least the first step. I am not completely satisfied with it yet and will soon make a second version of the tool. The second part, that my work can also just be fun, is also in making this nest. I have understood from colleagues in England that these types of nests are not that interesting financially, given the amount of work that goes into it and that combined with how much more people are willing to pay for them than for a single bowl. But yes, they are fun to make. So for the time being this is not going to be my standard bowl, but a nest every now and then... who knows #nestofbowls #polelathe #toolmaking #craft

My woodworking goals for 2025 are to grow in skill

My woodworking goals for 2025 are to grow in skills and to reduce the stress caused by running my own business. I try doing so by regulary reminding myself I actually really enjoy doing this and trying to accept sometimes things do not go as planned and even though some people might be disappointed by what I've made or the service provided, in general there seems to be much appreciation for what I'm trying to accomplish. And also by reminding myself I actually started doing this beacuse of the fun it provides and running a business and creating an income are means of making this possible and not the sole goal. At the Batavialand museum in the Netherlands I saw a skillfully decorated, 16th century wick (see last photo). The fineness of the details indicates very experienced carver. Inspired by, but certainly not with the idea of achieving the same quality, I made this cup from walnut wood. A small bowl with the bark side up, with a so called live edge. Turned on the pole lathe from hawthorn. Because the wood was still very green (only three weeks old) and because of the orientation, the bowl warped a lot while drying and it also got some crackshere and there. But with a few copper stitches it is perfectly usable. Okay, maybe not for soup. Honestly I liked it better before I painted it. But hey, you only learn something by trying. And what do you think? On this cup I wanted to try something I once saw in a Swedish book (don't ask me which book, I unfortunately don't have any info about it anymore, only a picture of a page from the book). A cup made of end grain wood with two little handles that don't really stick out past the thickest part of the belly. This walnut wood was perfect for that. Did you see the video last week of the bowl I was turning from walnut? This is the first one that is finished and oiled. I just love this wood. Because of the hardness it takes me about twice as much time as for a similar bowl from alder wood, but the result is definitely worth the effort. This one is reserved as a thank you for the donation campaign I held a few months ago. I am still keeping it a secret whom it is for. More of the thank yous will be shown here in the next few weeks. Hopefully I will have everything finished well before Christmas, which would be a suitable time to receive a gift. #woodworking #craft #handmade #bowl

In preparation for the commissioned bowl I posted two days ago, I turned a couple of large practice bowls. The goal was to practice both the shape and the coarse turning lines of the intended bowl. Some came out much thinner and with smaller turning lines though. That's because I finished a few with my regular turning hooks which are not great for coarse turning. Some were finished with my new monster hook which I made for coarse turning. However, I wanted to see if it could be used for a fine finish as well. And yes, it can. What a wonderful hook this is. I gave a few bowls a little something extra with some paint. Two other bowls already had their own decoration. Although wood in this state usually cannot be turned, or at least not crisp, these two bowls came out rather well. #bowlturning #woodenbowl #fruitbowl #homedecoration #handmade #polelathe #wood

I made this bowl for the @batavialand.lelystad mus

I made this bowl for the @batavialand.lelystad museum based on photos of a find from a shipwreck from 1593. Bowls from that era are often much coarser than, for example, those from the early Middle Ages or those I often strive for today. The combination of the coarse turning lines and the size of the bowl caused too much force to be exerted on the turning hooks (the turning tool I use on the pole lathe) that I normally use. This caused the hooks to vibrate during turning and I could not get a decent finish. I therefore forged a new hook from much thicker steel especially for this bowl. This worked perfectly! A beast of a turning hook with which I can remove a lot of wood at once and which is very stable, so that the result is really crisp. Although the final shape is not exactly the same as the original, I am still satisfied with the resemblance. And more importantly, the museum is too! This bowl will be part of the exhibition 'Onder Water' (in English 'Under water', as you might have expected 😀) , which will open on December 19. #batavia #museum #woodenbowl #replica #polelathe
